Before the season started, only one of these NFC teams was favored to capture a division crown- the defending champion Saints. Instead, it is their opponent who stands alone atop its division.

The Seattle Seahawks stormed past Arizona and into first place in the NFC West with a 36-18 victory last Sunday. Matt Hasselbeck sparkled in his return, throwing for 333 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter. Mike Williams hauled in 145 yards receiving, and Olindo Mare booted five field goals to propel the Seattle offense. The defense harassed the Cardinal offense, limiting them to one touchdown in the second half. Chris Clemons and Aaron Curry (2 sacks apiece) led the hit parade on Derek Anderson. It was a crucial win for Pete Caroll’s team given the way they have struggled both in their last two games and on the road. Seattle now has a one game lead over St. Louis in a tight division race, with a match-up scheduled between them in the last game of the year.

New Orleans may not be in first place, but the defending champions may have found their stride. They have won three out of their last four games, including a 34-3 beat-down of Carolina last time out. Drew Brees and Co. should be ready with a home game after a bye week. Atlanta holds a win game lead over the Saints and Buccanneers in the competitive NFC South, so every game is crucial from here on out.

Saints fans may be happy to see a familiar face return from injury and into the backfield. No, it’s not lead back Pierre Thomas. Reggie Bush is listed as questionable after missing the last seven games with a fibula injury. Sean Payton said he was optimistic about Bush, but his status should be monitored throughout the weekend. With injuries to him and Thomas, the Saints offense has dipped down into the middle of the pack in points per game. They do not have the balance from a year ago, and Drew Brees has 12 INTs after only 11 all of last year. Bush could provide the burst from the running back position that has been sorely lacking this season.

The signs point to a relatively easy Saints win. They have played well lately, are rested, and have more talent. But this year underdogs are thrived, and heavy favorites have fared poorly. If Hasselbeck can stay healthy for the game, I think Seattle can stay within single digits. The Seahawks defense (26 sacks) can get to the quarterback, and they will be thinking pass against the Saints offense.

Drew Brees is still piling up passing yards, but he can be forced into turnovers. This week he will have one fewer weapon with tight end Jeremy Shockey on the shelf. Seattle is the healthier team, and they have enough on their roster to make a game of it. New Orleans has not been dominant at home this season, and I do not have enough reasons to see that change this week.

After an exhilarating last-second victory in week ten, the Jacksonville Jaguars look to stay in the playoff hunt when they host the Cleveland Browns.

Tied at 24 with seconds to play against Houston, David Garrard’s hail-mary attempt was deflected by a Texan into the hands of Mike Thomas. The surprised receiver secured the bobbling pigskin and stepped into the end zone for the win. Jack Del Rio has gone from the hot seat to a game out of the playoffs in just a couple weeks. Garrard has caught fire the last two weeks, averaging 300 yards and three touchdowns this month.

The Jags quarterback is finally getting some help at receiver- Mike Thomas is on pace for just under 1,000 yards, and tight end Marcedes Lewis (7 TDs) has emerged as a reliable red zone target. Those two along with the hyphenated duo of Mike Sims-Walker and Maurce Jones-Drew form a solid offense.

Offensively Jacksonville has had some strong games, but the defense is another story. Matt Schaub and the Andre Johnson torched the secondary last week, and the Texans quarterback was only hit once during the entire game. There are not many names on the defense, and one of the them- defensive end Aaron Kampman- was placed on injury reserve last week. Without their top pass rusher, a questionable defense may be left with few answers. Football Outsiders ranks the unit 28th against the pass and 29th against the run. The run defense will be tested this Sunday when the Browns come to town.

Cleveland was on the losing side of a thriller against the Jets last week. After Colt McCoy led an impressive game-tying touchdown drive to force overtime, the Browns fumbled away an opportunity for a third straight win. Actually, Chancy Stuckey fumbled it away. The ex-Jets receiver took a pass down the sideline and into New York territory early in overtime, only to lose the ball in an effort the gain extra yards. Had he held onto the ball or stepped out of bounds, Cleveland would have already been knocking on the door of field goal range. Instead, the Jets pulled it out with under a minute left.

Although the Browns came up short, they played strong against elite competition for the third straight game (New England last week, New Orleans the game before). It sounds cliché, but this team plays a lot tougher than their 3-6 record indicates. Eric Mangini has his players playing hard, and his aggressive style has thrown opponents off balance.

There is a bright future on the offensive side with Colt McCoy and Peyton Hillis leading the way. McCoy fell in the draft, but has showed why he won so much in college- he is a poised, mature, and smart player. He really stepped up under pressure against New York, and has thrived throwing out of the pocket. Hillis has been a pleasant surprise as their most feared weapon. The powerful running back has been superb of late, bulldozing over opponents and displaying surprising quickness. The offensive line is also strong. Unfortunately, the receiving corps does not provide much help, and wild card Josh Cribbs will likely be out with a toe injury.

Given their personnel and the Jaguars’ poor run defense, expect a lot of Hillis rushes this Sunday. Mangini does not want to have his rookie throw too many passes, and their passing game is not very explosive. It will be important for the Browns to get a lead or stay close given that Hillis and tight end Ben Watson are the primary offensive threats. Jack Del Rio will try to establish a more offensively-oriented game. Cleveland’s defense is solid, but they can be thrown on. If Garrard continues to throw the ball accurately, the Browns will probably not be able to keep up.

I am not crazy about this game, but I think there is a little more value with Jacksonville laying under two points. They are not a particularly strong team, but their offense is the more trustworthy of the two. Cleveland has one road win all year, thanks to a couple of defensive touchdowns against the Saints. That is not a reliable formula to win away from home. I think they have been overachieving a little recently as well. Barring a dominant effort on the ground, the Browns will come up short here.

It’s a battle for fist place in the NFC East as the Philadelphia Eagles host the new York Giants in prime time on Sunday Night Football.

The Eagles are sky high after coming off of a beat down of the Washington Redskins in Washington on Monday Night Football where Andy Reid’s team made a statement to the NFC and the world that they were for real and were a contender to win it all. Michael Vick is back to the old player we new before all of the drama and as ugly as his off the field issues have been, his play on the field has been nothing short of spectacular. Vick has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,350 yards for 11 touchdowns without throwing an interception while at teh same time running for 341 yards and four touchdowns. LeSean McCoy has been the workhorse in the backfield rushing for 615 yards and five touchdowns and catching 46 passes for 352 yards. DeSean Jackson has emerged as one of the best deep threats in the game averaging 21.5 yards per catch and scoring five times and Jeremy Maclin somehow flies under the radar as Philadelphia’s leading receiver with 38 catches and seven touchdowns. Defensively it’s been physical Eagles football with Quinten Mikell leading in tackles with 51 while Trent Cole has 43 tackles and seven sacks. Juqua Parker has five sacks and as a team Philadelphia is bringing the heat with 26 sacks. Asante Samuel has five interceptions and Dimitri Patterson and Nate Allen have three interceptions each and as a team the Eagles have 16. As a team Philadelphia has been averaging 28.6 points and 400.2 yards while defensively they allow 23.2 points and 324.2 yards.

The New York Giants looked to be cruising along and many were calling the the best team in the NFL until last Sunday when their five game winning streak came to a screeching halt at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. While the Cowboys were breaking off the big plays, the Giants were very much in it but just when it looked like they were ready to claw their way back in it, it was big mistakes and big break downs leading to long Dallas scoring plays. While it was Eli Manning’s poor decision and interception that went for 101 yards in the wrong direction, he is having a solid year. For the season Manning has completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 2,448 yards with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while getting sacked 12 times. Ahmad Bradshaw has rushed for 838 yards and five touchdowns but he’s also fumbled in some key spots as has Brandon Jacobs who has five touchdowns and 377 yards. Hakeem Nicks is Manning’s main target and more than likely a Pro Bowl receiver as he has 735 yards and nine touchdowns on 56 catches but with Steve Smith out until December, New York has a void to fill. Defensively Antrell Rolle, Michael Boley, and Terrell Thomas are all tied for the lead in team tackles with 49 and Osi Umenyiora has nine of the Giants 25 sacks. Thomas and Deon Grant are tied for the Giants team lead in interceptions with three. For the season New York is averaging 26.2 points and 409.8 yards while the defense is allowing 21.4 points and 270.2 yards.

Philadelphia is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games as a home favorite, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games against a team with a winning record, and 5-1-1 against the spread in their last seven Sunday games following a Monday Night game. new York is 21-7 against the spread in their last 28 road games, 12-4 against the spread in their last 16 games as a road underdog, and 3-7-1 against the spread in their last 11 games following a straight up loss. The underdog has covered in 10 of the last 11 meetings of these two and the road team has covered in five of the last six.

This game winds down what should be a great day of football with a lot of meaningful games and this one will be a bruise fest as these teams don’t like each other at all and the Philadelphia sports crowd is as tough as they come. While both of these teams can put up numbers, these teams can bring the heat as well and with Steve Smith out for the Giants I think they may play a little more keep away with Bradshaw and Jacobs while at the same time trying to keep Vick and friends off the field. Philly’s secondary is second to none so this strategy makes a lot of sense. With that being said, the total is rising in this game on this as I write this and it’s currently at 49. For my free play I think tis game goes under the total as it’s falsely inflated by what everyone in the world saw on Monday Night which was Eagles flying down the field. I also have a play as to who will cover the spread and I’ll post that play in the Premium Area for our Premium Subscribers.

Two of the most improved teams in the NFL meet up as the St. Louis Rams host the Atlanta Falcons.

The St. Louis Rams are used to drafting at the top of the NFL draft order but they have parlayed most of those picks into quality football players and the results are being shown on the field. While the Rams still may have some building to do, they aren’t as far as they were at this point last season. The only thing that is separating the Rams and a winning record thus far is an overtime loss last week to San Francisco. Sam Bradford is going through the learning process of being an NFL QB but despite having the 30th ranked scoring offense in the NFL, Bradford isn’t costing his team games. For the season Bradford has completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 1,925 yards and 12 touchdowns with eight interceptions. Stephen Jackson has rushed for 757 yards and three touchdowns as he continues to try and carry the team on his back. Danny Amendola has 52 catches for 430 yards and three touchdowns and Brandon Gibson has 26 catches for 300 yards. The Rams defense is improving as James Lauinaitis has 59 tackles and three sacks and Craig Dahl has 51. James Hall has seven and a half sacks while former first rounder Chris Long has five and a half. Oshiomogho Atogwe, Bradley Fletcher, and James Butler all have two interceptions as the Rams have eight on the season. St. Louis is averaging 17.8 points and 305.9 yards per game and the defense is allowing 18.2 points and 325.8 yards per game.

The Atlanta Falcons missed the playoffs last season despite putting together the first back to back winning seasons in franchise history and they look like a team determined to get back this season. The Falcons lead the very competitive NFC South by a game over the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite playing a tough schedule. Matt Ryan is proving to simply be a winner as he’s completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 2,265 yards and 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Michael Turner has rushed for 733 yards, many of them tough yards while grinding out five touchdowns. Roddy White is proving to be an elite receiver with 70 catches for 934 yards and seven touchdowns and last week against the Ravens he caught the game winner in the waning minutes after making two uncharacteristic drops. Tony Gonzalez still has something left in the tank as he’s caught 41 passes for 402 yards and three touchdowns. Curtis Lofton has 73 tackles and two sacks while Stephen Nicholas has 50 tackles as they lead the team. John Abraham has eight sacks as Atlanta has 18 as a team. The Falcon secondary has been ball hawks with 14 interceptions including three each by William Moore and Brent Grimes. For the season Atlanta is averaging 24.7 points and 369.2 yards per game while the defense is allowing 19.4 points and 343.4 yards per game.

St. Louis is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games as an underdog, 5-1 against the spread in their last six games against the NFC, and 4-1 against the spread in theri last five against a team with a winning record. Atlanta is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against a team with a losing record, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven road games, and 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 games overall. The favorite has covered six of the last seven meetings and the home team has covered five of the last six.

This line looks like a trap and a sucker bet as the odds makers look to be begging us to take the Falcons as we just saw them beat the Ravens last Thursday so they are coming off extended rest and look like a sure playoff team who is facing a middle of the road team who is probably a year away. We can’t be scared away by the prospect of the trap but we can tread lightly and I think this one falls into the damned if we do, damned if we don’t category.

Week 10 was a week to forget for both the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers. While both teams picked up a loss in their last game it was a little harder for the Ravens to swallow their loss than it was for the Panthers. Carolina sits at 1-8, and while they of course aren’t happy about their record they knew how difficult this season was going to be for them. The Ravens, on the other hand, are coming off of a tough road loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The Baltimore Ravens had completed their comeback. After being down two scores, Joe Flacco was able to lead his offense down the field twice for two touchdowns and the lead. With only moments left in the game, the Ravens had the exact setup they could’ve wished for after being down the entire game in week 10. With the Ravens pride-filled defense out on the field looking to end the game, the Falcons marched down the field and capped off their drive with a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Roddy White who was unstoppable the entire game. After a few play with only seconds left on the clock from the Ravens offense the game was over and the rough and tough Ravens found themselves deflated. The Ravens pride themselves on being able to stop anyone and everyone with their defense, especially in end of game situations. After blowing the lead like they did last week they get to come back against a weak Carolina team. QB Joe Flacco has had control of this offense all season long as has been a big part of the reason this team is a top five power rankings team. Of course the Baltimore defense keeps them high in the rankings, but as we saw last week sometimes the offense is just as important as the defense in Baltimore. Against Carolina, Flacco will have plenty of opportunities to show off what he can do and to help his team makeup for last weeks debacle. You can bet the defense will be out looking for the Panthers to call mercy after what they allowed to happen last week. This Ravens defense is extremely better than anything the Panthers can throw at them to stop the rush as we expect the Ravens to be blitzing most of the game. Turnovers should happen frequently in this game thanks to the Ravens defense and points should be blowing for Flacco and this potent offense which also includes talented RB Ray Rice and star wideout Anquan Boldin.

The Carolina Panthers head home after losing on the road last week to Tampa Bay extending their losing streak to three games. Injuries have hit this team hard on both offense and defense and it shows in the points columns. The Panthers have scored a total of 104 points while giving up a whopping 215 points to their opponents in nine games this season. The Panthers are 1-4 at home this season and have allowed at least 20 points per home game to the visitor. Carolina managed to score more than seven points at home only once and it came in their only win of the season when they scored 23 points against the 49er’s. As the defense continues to struggle, the Panthers have a new issue to figure out. Starting QB Matt Moore has already been placed on IR and backup rookie QB Jimmy Clausen was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a serious hit in last week’s game against the Buccaneers. If Clausen is unable to go in this one it will most likely be rookie Tony Pike who will get to lead this team on the field. The only other possible option would be QB Brian St. Pierre who the Panthers activated from the practice squad this week. While this situation will loom big in the Panthers offensive gameplan it still doesn’t change much in the outlook of this game. The Panthers have very little hop to their skip outside of running back Goodson who has taken over for both injured backs in Williams and Stewart. Goodson recorded his first career 100-yard game last week and is probably the only person who looks like he can do much with the ball right now for this team. The defense will likely struggle against the Ravens who are able to run and pass efficiently. Protecting the run gaps will be the first priority for the Panthers, but it will be a true test against a massive Ravens line. On offense, expect the Panthers to do their best to control the clock with the run game through Goodson, but he should also find out just how stout the Ravens can be on defense.

On paper this game is a severe mismatch, and in all actuality it’s probably even a little worse than that. 10 point favorites on the road usually spell trouble, but in this case it’s as safe as taking pretty much any other line this week. The Ravens haven’t played since last Thursday and aren’t exactly the happiest bunch in the NFL right now. After waiting for over a week to have another chance to get back on the field, Baltimore is going to come off fast in this one and we should see the white flags for Carolina being waived around halftime. Take the Ravens in this one with confidence that there will be no late comebacks or backdoor covers for the Panthers.

The Chan Gailey era has finally begun in Buffalo as the Bills are coming off their first win of the season and it only took them 10 weeks to get the job done. Buffalo was able to fend off the Lions in the fourth quarter of a tight football game to become the last team to register a win this season. The Cincinnati Bengals are starting to feel like the Bills as they have lost the last six games they’ve played. Last season’s Cardiac Cats have returned, but this year they haven’t been able to get that final score in regulation to either tie the game or get the win. In six of the Bengals seven losses this season they lost by one score or less with the latest being a six point loss to the Colts in which they came back and had the ball with a chance to take the lead had they scored a late touchdown.

With Chan Gailey finally in the winners column he is now focused on starting a win streak. This week against the Bengals is as good a chance as any to get the Bills second win of the season. Last game the Bills were paced by running back Fred Jackson who ran 25 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. Jackson also caught six passes for 37 yards including a 16-yard pass that resulted in a touchdown from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. While Fitzpatrick only completed 12 of his 24 passes for under 150 yards it was enough as the Bills were able to control the ball and move on with a win. Buffalo’s defense allowed Lions QB Shaun Hill to throw for 323 yards, but were able to give up only 76 yards on the ground. The turning point in the game came late in the fourth quarter when the Lions were stopped on a 2-pt conversion try that would have tied the game, but instead gave the Bills their first win of the season. This week, the Bills will look to do more of the same against the Bengals in their gameplan. Fred Jackson will be a large part of the offense this week most likely carrying the ball 25 times again. Star receiver Lee Evans will need to step up in this one and make a few big plays as well. Evans talent has always drawn plenty of attention from opposing defenses and it has caused him to have few opportunities a game. However, it was also allowed fellow receiver Steve Johnson to step up this season into the role of the top receiver for this Bills team as he leads the team with 44 receptions for 591 yards and 6 touchdowns. The defense is going to need to focus on being successful against the run this week just like they were last week allowing those 76 yards on 26 carries and no touchdowns. Through the air it will Owens who will be shadowed as he is having one of the best years he’s had in a while, and he is also playing his former team.

With Terrell Owens playing against another former team of his it should be interesting to see how he treats them in between plays, but during plays the Bengals expect him to be making big ones. In recent weeks T.O. has overshadowed fellow teammate and received Chad Ochocinco and it is apparent Chad is not happy about the recent developments of the ball sharing situation. Carson Palmer has developed a liking for throwing to T.O. since he has done pretty much everything with the ball so far this season catching 59 passes for 834 yards and seven scores. Ochocinco has only caught 47 passes for 559 yards and three scores and he is not too happy about that differential, especially since his team has only two wins. Aside from the WR issues this team has failed to close out a game that was close this season since week two and it has cost them arguably up to six wins. If the fourth quarter were to go a little differently for this team it would be a completely different season, but right now it hasn’t and the Bengals are staring at a 2-9 start if they can’t work together against the Bills who are coming into this game hungry for another win. While Palmer has thrown 16 touchdowns he has also thrown 11 interceptions and some of them have been costly. Against the Bills, the Bengals plan will most likely be to pound the ball with Cedric Benson or see if Owens can slice up the Bills DB’s. With Ochocinco’s head sometimes out of the game it will be interesting to see how big a role he plays in this game, especially when it gets down to the end. While the Bengals have struggled this season they still have the talent on both sides of the ball to get big wins, and even though they are playing the 1-8 Buffalo Bills this would be a big confidence win for the team.

The Buffalo Bills played scrappy in their last game and it got them the win. The Cincinnati Bengals have scrapped away more wins this season then they would like to remember. As the season gets into the second half teams start to realize that they aren’t in playoff contention and for some of them that takes their heads out of the game. The Bengals certainly have some players that are thinking about missing the playoffs this season, but the Bills are just excited to come into this game off of a win. I’m taking the Bills in this one getting the 5.5 points. Right now the Bills are coming off a well played game against a tough Lions team in which they went out and won it with their defense. The Bengals have been able to average just over 20 points a game, but it seems like they are always in a tight one, and obviously coming out on the short end most of the time. Take the Bills and the points in this one and watch Chan Gailey go out there and possibly get his second win of the season, and even if he doesn’t I expect Buffalo to stay within the 5.5 points.
